Carbonitriding

Carbonitriding is a surface heat treatment that combines the diffusion of carbon and nitrogen into the surface of steel in order to improve its hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue strength, while maintaining a tough and resilient core.

AEB Torneria does not carry out this treatment in-house but manages it in collaboration with highly specialized external suppliers, selected for their ability to ensure controlled processes and results consistent with the required specifications.

Thanks to its experience in precision machining (steel, brass, and other alloys) and full management of the production cycle, AEB coordinates the entire process—from part preparation to final post-treatment inspection—ensuring that each component complies with the technical standards of critical industries such as transportation, safety, medical, and civil engineering.

Technical features and benefits of carbonitriding

Surface hardness with a tough core
The treatment forms a hardened surface layer with a gradual profile, resistant to wear, abrasion, and repeated contact loads. The core, unaffected by diffusion, retains more ductile mechanical properties, making it ideal for parts subjected to complex stresses.

Accurate process control via certified partners
AEB works with suppliers equipped with advanced, controlled-atmosphere systems, where key parameters—such as temperature, duration, chemical environment, and cooling rate—are precisely managed. This approach ensures uniformity of the treated layer, minimal distortion, and full compliance with required dimensional tolerances.

Typical applications of carbonitriding

Components for transportation and mobility
Ideal for gears, shafts, pins, and dowels, or any moving mechanical elements subject to cyclic loads and repeated contact, requiring high surface hardness and long-term dimensional stability.

Safety, medical, and civil industries
Used to protect precision parts, fastening systems, and components exposed to harsh environments or where long-lasting reliability, durability, and functional integrity are essential.
